How incredibly wrong was I………………Nevermind!

Currently I am sitting in our dining room at the table with a snivelling cold and a horribly runny nose. Winter has arrived today in the Northern hemisphere and I am listening to Nirvana’s “Nevermind” album. The album is currently celebrating its twenty-sixth year as a rock icon. It is truly a masterpiece of angst and the turmoil of youth.

I remember hearing it for the first time the week it was released in September 1991 and I thought “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was just mind-blowing, As a young musician studying “Jazz” at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, I wrote it off as just another nauseating offering from the home of the Grunge Genre…….Seattle, Washington.

You know I didn’t think the album was that great when I first heard it and I also didn’t think it would stand the test of time. How incredibly wrong was I.

I guess my point is this. Sometimes we need to listen to things again after an extended period away to really appreciate just how special they are. It has taken me twenty six years to really hear what Kirk, Christ and Dave were trying to say as kids.

To tell you the truth, I cannot stop listening to this record! It just simply makes me want to rock out. I listen to it while I write, while I am doing hang board sessions and while I drive. It inspires me, it makes me smile and gets me motivated.

I recently finished reading Dave Grohl’s biography “This Is A Call”. It was a parting gift that has travelled the world with me. Yep I finally read it……and……. it was really very inspiring. Not only did I want to listen to “Nevermind”, but I also decided to go back and have a listen to some of the bands he was in before Nirvana. Doing this also made me investigate bands like “Cheap Trick” before the commercial virus attacked and “Bad Brains”…….OMG these guys are super intense and way off the charts.

Anyways thats it for today! I feel like shit and I am going to have a tea to ease my snivelling nose and mind and try to find inspiration else where right now. 🙂
